We are announcing today Nexmo Labs, which hosts beta products, integrations, and experimental projects.
To get started, you will find the private beta of both USSD and Nexmo OAuth.
USSD it is a messaging technology similar to SMS but is session based instead of the usual store and forward. We offer two types of interactions:
- Push: Outbound notification
- Prompt: Outbound notification with optional reply
It is super easy to try USSD since it is exactly the same REST API as SMS but pointed to a different end-point. You might not need to change your code!
Our USSD reach is supposed to be global but for now we decided to start rolling out in UK and Russia, where we know we have full reach. If you are curious and interested to help us improve this new product, feel free to sign-up for the private beta in labs,
The next product we have launched in labs is OAuth, which is a standard for negotiating developer authorization and granting access on behalf of Nexmo users to perform API requests. This means you can add SMS support to your application without the need to authenticate users or even have a billing relationships with them. Let us deal with that! Users can sign-up into your application using their Nexmo credentials. Similar to when you use your twitter or facebook account to sign-in to third party applications.
OAuth is great if your core business is to build software and you want to let your users benefit from Nexmo great wholesale pricing and direct to carrier network.
We expect to add more experimental products in the coming weeks. Watch that space!

- Approve your traffic by the Indian regulator

There is a lot of buzz about how cloud computing is disrupting the telecom industry. If you want to see what this disruption really means in our industry, watch Nexmo CTO Eric Nadalin speaking at Amazon AWS Re:Invent event below.
Nexmo pushes over 7 million records per day to the cloud and with tools such as SimpleDB and DynamoDB we were able to provide real time search and analytics while keeping our cost down. No need to hire an army of DB administrators to manage our scale or over-dimension our infrastrucrure to cope with surges of traffic. Relying on the cloud enables us to scale elastically and pay for only the capacity we need.
As a result, we keep our OPEX down, which in turns sustain our competitiveness while providing great customer experience.

Getting an SMS into Latvia can be tricky and espensive to some of the networks. Today Nexmo is using a local partner with direct connections which allows us to lower our pricing.
From today, SMS to Latvia will cost €0.035 per SMS to LMT and Bite or €0.045 to Tele2 and Triatel
The route is fully featured, so dynamic sender ID and handset delivery can be expected.
Today Nexmo is pleased to launch Long Numbers in Austria. Priced at €2.50 per number per month, these will enable 2-way SMS with your customers.
Due to the setup with the operators when you acquire a Long Number there will be a change to the MT service for your account in order to maintain direct route towards Austrian subscribers. Any SMS sent to Austria without using the Long Number as Sender ID will have Sender ID changed to +43676800505001. If you decide to stop using Austrian numbers and wish to return to the regular MT service, please contact us.
More countries are on the way in the coming weeks - watch this space!
Like most of Western Europe, the Italian Operators charge a high termination fee for SMS delivery.
Today Nexmo is launching a local direct to provide a saving on the SS7 fees, In addition to the usual anti-spam policy, the Italian networks are keen to stress that using a company name in the Sender ID is only allowed when the message is from that company.
Polish operators have shut down most of the SS7 connections, however, they do allow A2P to come in at a lower price level than P2P traffic.
Today Nexmo is is able to deliver messages via a local connection. Alpha Sender IDs are dynamic, Numeric Sender IDs are replaced with ‘NXSMS’ As well as the usual ‘no spam’ policy, our partner has provided some additional info on blocked content: senders like “Policja”, “Polkomtel”, “Orange”, “T-Mobile”, “PLAY” will be rejected.
Messages with ads of Premium Rate services in content will be rejected, - messages with betting odds will be rejected.
